A favourite graphic tee gets worn, washed and worn again. The aim is to clean it without putting the fabric and print through more heat or friction than they need.
Start with the care label. A printed cotton tee, an appliquéd design and a garment with a special finish may need different treatment. Once you know the permitted temperature, cycle and drying method, the routine is straightforward.
Before it goes in the machine
Turn the T-shirt inside out to reduce rubbing against the printed surface. Wash with compatible colours, and keep exposed zips, hooks and rough fabrics away from the graphic.
Leave enough space in the drum for the clothes to move. Packing it tightly makes a gentle wash less useful.
Keep to the recommended settings
If the label calls for a cold, gentle wash, use it. Gentle agitation reduces mechanical stress, while avoiding high temperatures helps limit heat-related changes to the fabric and print.
A stubborn stain needs attention before the next wash, rather than a hotter cycle by default. If the label is missing or unclear, check with the brand before choosing a treatment.
Use the right amount of detergent
Choose a detergent suitable for the garment and follow the dosing instructions. Extra detergent can leave residue instead of giving you a cleaner shirt.
Keep bleach and aggressive stain removers out of the routine unless the care instructions allow them. “Safe for colours” does not tell you whether a treatment is suitable for a printed surface.
Deal gently with stains near the print
Check the garment label and the stain remover's directions before treating a mark. Where treatment is permitted, test it on an inconspicuous area first.
Avoid scrubbing over the graphic or applying a concentrated product straight onto it without checking compatibility. If the stain remains, ask for care advice rather than working at it harder.
Give drying as much thought as washing
If the instructions say hang or lay flat to dry, skip the tumble dryer. Its heat and movement add stress to both the fabric and the print.
Gently smooth the tee into shape while damp, without stretching or wringing it. Support it as it dries, keep it out of prolonged direct sunlight and let it dry completely before folding it away.
Keep the iron away from the graphic
Iron only if the care label permits it, using the specified temperature and method. Do not put an iron directly on the print unless the garment's instructions explicitly allow it.
Turning the tee inside out does not block the heat from reaching the graphic. If you are unsure, leave the printed area alone.
Why a print changes over time
Repeated stretching, rubbing and heat can contribute to cracking or fading. The printing method, application and fabric also affect how the graphic wears, so a change in the surface is not necessarily down to one wash.
Good care reduces unnecessary wear; it cannot restore a print that has already deteriorated. The cotton type is a separate detail. SUPIMA® describes the fibre, not the durability of the artwork applied to it.
Caring for a MAISON MENACE graphic tee
For the Samurai SUPIMA® Cotton T-Shirt, wash inside out on a cold, gentle cycle, then hang or lay flat to dry. Do not tumble dry.
For other designs, follow the care instructions supplied with the garment. You can find the current styles in the MAISON MENACE T-shirts collection.
A routine you can keep
Turn it inside out, use the labelled wash settings and dry it as directed. A few consistent habits are more useful than a complicated laundry trick, especially for a tee you wear often.
